Container traffic at Egypt's Port of Alexandria rose sharply in August, according to the port authority.
The numbers
Containers: about 213,400 TEU, up roughly 15% from 186,300 TEU in August 2025. Exports and imports were almost evenly split, at about 106,900 and 106,800 TEU.
Total cargo: about 6.44 million tonnes, close to last year's 6.46 million tonnes.
Ship calls: down about 14%, from 480 to 415 vessels. Container ship calls fell by around 13%.
Grain imports: down about 33%, linked to the Russia-Ukraine war and continued disruption in the Black Sea.
What is driving it
The port authority credits the growth in containers to expanded operations at the Tahya Misr terminal, which it says is strengthening Alexandria's place in the regional logistics network. Fewer but larger calls carrying more boxes point to a shift toward bigger container ships on this route.
What it means for shippers
For cargo moving between Israel and Egypt or through the Eastern Mediterranean, Alexandria is handling more containers with fewer vessel calls. Expect fewer sailing options but more capacity per call, and confirm schedules and transit times with your forwarder.
